antique Carriage Lamps - What's So Special?

antique Carriage Lamps - What's So Special?

In the seventeenth century, the appropriate for travel was the horse drawn carriage. This was a great correction over the other transportation alternatives of the day, horseback riding or walking. Of course, a carriage required lamps to light the traveler's way, much like the headlights of today's automobiles. There is an interest today in ancient carriage lamps from those very horse drawn carriages.

Most ancient carriage lamps were made of brass and wood. Well constructed and quite durable, these carriage lamps have come to be extremely desirable as collectible items. Horse drawn carriages were whether enclosed or open. The enclosed carriage had a top cover (called the head or hood), ordinarily made of a flexible material for folding back, when the passengers wished to ride in the open air. A ended carriage ordinarily featured side windows, also known as quarter lights, as well as windows.

Lamps from those very same carriages are collected today. They were mounted on whether side of the carriage, near the quarter lights, or were mounted on the doors. Their purpose was twofold. Not only did they function as a protection measure, production the carriage illustrated on the road to other drivers, but a carriage lights also provided light for the passengers inside.

That which we referred to today as a carriage lamp ordinarily refers a style of lamp as opposed to its function or use. Contemporary houses highlight reproduction carriage lamps. These are typically mounted on whether side of the front door. They range in size from ten to eighteen inches in height. ancient carriage lamps burned fuel oil which was located in a fluted post below the four to six sided globe (also known as a shade). Contemporary reproductions still highlight the fluted post but it no longer contains fuel oil.

It is possible to find genuine ancient carriage lamps at yard sales or flea markets but these are most often found in ancient shops, sometimes nestled among a jumble of other items. You might try shopping for ancient carriage lamps on the Internet - they are quite favorite there. Not only can you purchase these lamps online, that you can also purchase materials to repair or restore them. ancient carriage lamps are ordinarily sold in pairs because that is how they were used and a set of good capability lamps can sell for as much as 0.00.

Hanging Lamps

Hanging Lamps

Hanging lamps have been very favorite since the old days, in decorating the room. Hanging lamps are suspended from the ceiling with the help of a hook attached to the base of the lamp. This helps the lamp to remain suspended from the ceiling facing downwards and thus being able to light up the room and unfold the décor. Hanging lamps can be illuminated with oil wicks, gas, candles or electrical devices. These lamps do not take up room space and yet deliver the desired elegance to the room.

Hanging lamps come in different shapes and sizes, made of different materials. different patterns are used to beautify the lamp and make provisions for placing lighting devices, to conceal them. The different categories of hanging lamps include chandeliers and dinner and ceiling hanging lamps. On the basis of the designs and patterns, they can be used in different rooms. A gorgeous chandelier is apt to adorn the living room or the drawing room, whereas comparatively simpler dinner lamps are best fine for the dining rooms.

appeal Lamps - A History

appeal Lamps - A History

A very attractive lamp!

Can you believe that petition lamps originated as far back as circa 1930 and became very favorite during the 1950's when Tv lamps were in high demand. The shade was a drum style made with a louvered or fan blade top so that the heat from the bulb rising straight through the top louvers would gradually turn the shade. Some models had a penetrative painted scene on an exterior shell which did not move and the attractive painted or striated drum on the inside would imply petition to the painted scene. favorite themes were attractive water scenes, rivers, Niagara Falls and a puny boy peeing, ha!

Lamps & Light Fixtures LED Small Flood

I have a heavy metal Niagara Falls lamp from colse to 1930 that is truly awesome especially in a darkened room. It is made like a very attractive 3 dimensional metal picture frame on an ornate stand. There is no shade but where the picture would be is the Niagara Falls scene and it looks like the falls are in motion.

You can occasionally find one of these petition Lamps at an aged store or a flea market. It is very difficult to find one that works properly because many of the parts are truly lost or broken. You may also find one listed for sale on Ebay. The nicer ones ordinarily sell for many hundreds of dollars.

Motion lamps are still being made today but unfortunately they are very cheap novelty models made in China and not something your grand children will be enjoying.

Glass Fairy Lamps

Glass Fairy Lamps

One of the most sought after collectibles in both new and vintage lighting are glass fairy lamps. This type of light was invented by Samuel Clarke in the late 1800's and commonly used as a night light. Regularly lit by a candle in floating water, it originally had a paper shade. This lamp caught on fast and became quite popular. It was produced by many fellowships and many versions of the puny lamp were manufactured. The paper shade was soon replaced with glass and some became very elegant.

Companies like Mosser, Indiana Glass, Le Smith, Viking, Westmoreland and Fenton began manufacturing these lamps. Many of the patterns and glass types in early yield were crafted from a practical standpoint and they weren't all that pretty. Later, as they became wildly popular, they were made by art glass fellowships in many gorgeous designs and glass types.

The Fenton Art Glass business precisely came back strong with Fairy lamps in the 50's and some of them are precisely beautiful! These lamps are still artificial by Fenton, Mosser and other fellowships today. They are still very collectible and many habitancy anticipate and buy the new designs year after year for their displays.

Finding vintage fairy lamps is a hobby for many art glass enthusiasts. Local ancient shops are a good source but you will pay a lot. Attending estate sales and auctions is another good source and you can Regularly find some great lamps at great prices. The downside is the time it takes to find and travel to these sales. It's also seasonal, winter is not a good time for estate sales.

One of the best places for purchasing these fairy lights is online auctions like eBay. The option is very good as well as the prices. There are hundreds of these collectibles available, mostly vintage, and even some rare Viking, S Clarke, Westmoreland and Mosser can still be found for your collection. The vintage Fenton Glass fairy lamps are in great plentifulness and many in perfect condition. antique Lamps Are Conversation Pieces

antique Lamps Are Conversation Pieces

There is nothing that adds more elegance and automated milieu to a room's décor than an aged lamp. They are amazing objects to have in a dining room or living room because they not only make a personal statement about you but because they are great conversation pieces. There is nothing
like a 1930s big chandelier with large drops of ice hanging from it to help break the ice with your dinner companions.

Perhaps the most beloved of the aged lamps are the lava lamps. It is getting harder and harder nowadays to find a real lava lamp from the fifties or sixties. The knock offs that can be had for twenty dollars and be bought in a hardware store are simply not as nice as the ones you find on eBay or in aged shops. This is because the newer replicas tend to be a lot smaller then the customary lava lamps that were sometimes tall enough to reach your knee. They also often contain glitter instead of the "lava" and their form is not as nice. If you administrate to find a real lava lamp from the fifties then the form from the Atomic Age is sure to come to be a conversation starter.

Lamps & Light Fixtures LED Small Flood

One of the most appealing aged lamp fads that is colse to lately is the passion for chandeliers made out of deer antlers. These date back as far as the 1890s and right through to today. They were appropriate lamp fixtures in medieval times in Europe (as they do have a bit of a pagan flair to them) but they are also thought about to be part of American and Canadian furniture kitsch.

However keep in mind that when you buy one of these deer chandeliers that it is not always that politically correct. Some unscrupulous dealers are selling this type of thing on eBay as being made out of found antlers when what they have done is take the antlers off of live deer. This is a big
ecological no-no. You are safest to look in aged shops and for chandeliers that look like they have been found on the ground. These antlers will not have sawed off ends. If they do have sawed off ends you might start the wrong type of conversation at your dinner party especially if you have invited any animal lovers.

Yet an additional one very beloved type of kitsch aged lamp that is being artificial right now is the "Sexy Leg Lamp." This is the lamp that was featured in the movie "The Christmas Story." It consists of a plastic molded ladies leg wearing a black high heel and it is topped with a shade that looks like a burlesque dancer's skirt. If you have one of these in your home, your guests are sure to point out that "you have the same lamp that Ralphie's Dad does."

A kind of lamp that is getting harder and harder to find but used to be a coarse sight on top of television sets all over the world is the classic ceramic black panther that is topped with a shade made from paper pressed with glitter.

Color climatic characteristic in Fluorescent Lamps

Color climatic characteristic in Fluorescent Lamps

What is color temperature?

Two fluorescent lamps may have a power of say 30W. This means that they will both give an incandescent equivalent of about 150W, and have the same brightness, but the type (or quality) of light they give could be vastly different, depending on their 'colour temperature'. This is often quoted, in one way or another, to retell the type of light given by a fluorescent lamp.

Lamps & Light Fixtures LED Small Flood

What is white light?

Fluorescent lamps work by the ultra violet dismissal inside the tube astonishing the coating, which then produces white light. White light is a aggregate of all colours of the descriptive spectrum, but the mix can be different, and the more from the red end of the spectrum, the 'yellower' the light, the more from the violet end the 'bluer' the light. The coating of the tube is responsible for the type of light emitted. Dissimilar compositions of coating give Dissimilar qualities of light..

How is color temperature measured?

To make matters more complicated, this can be given as Kelvins (K) of the lamp, or as a colour code. These are two ways of describing the same thing. The following describes discrete light sources:

- 1700K is approx. A match flame
- 1850K is approx. A candle flame
- 2700K or colour code 827 is the colour of most incandescent lamps and is often called warm white or very warm white
- 3000K or 830 is the colour of most halogen lamps and is called warm white
- 3500K or 835 is the colour of early morning or evening sunlight and is called white
- 4000K or 840 is the colour of stronger sunlight and is called cool white
- 6000K or 850 is the colour of craftlight or daylight lamps and is called daylight white
- 6500K or 860 is the colour of some devotee lamps and is called cool daylight
- 10000K is the approx. Colour of a sharp day with blue skies.

Fluorescent lamps can be made in the middle of 2700K and 6500K. Commonly the higher the colour temperature, the more expensive the lamp, and the 'whiter' the lamp. Some population prefer a 'softer' yellowish tone for artificial lighting, and rooms with lots of reds and yellows. Others prefer a 'cooler' bluish tone, especially for rooms with lots of blues and greens. Close intricate work, such as sewing, embroidery, etc. Benefits from high colour temperatures, as do older people, whose eyesight is deteriorating.
